Organisers
  1. The AVBOB Road to Literacy (the “Campaign”) is organised by AVBOB Mutual Assurance Society a society incorporated under Private Act No. 7 of 1951, with its registered address at 5 Impala Avenue, Block D, Irene Link Office Park, Doringkloof, Centurion, 0157 (“AVBOB”). Opening and closing time
  1. The Campaign opens for entry at 09h00 South African Standard Time (SAST) on 19 January 2026.
  2. The closing date of the Campaign is at 23h59 South African Standard Time (SAST) on 31 March 2026.
Entries
  1. The Campaign is open to primary schools, non-profit organisations (NPOs) and educational institutions that cater for learners from Grade R to Grade 7 in South Africa.
  2. Members of the public may identify and nominate an institution of their choice by completing the online entry form: www.roadtoliteracy.co.za
  3. Only online submissions completed in English will be accepted.
  4. Campaign entrants may only nominate one school per cell phone number and/or email address used to make the nomination. Each entrant may submit up to a maximum of 5 nominations.
  5. Each institution’s eligibility will be assessed by AVBOB, assisted by Oxford University Press Southern Africa (“OUP”). No correspondence or discussions will be entered into.
  6. With the exception of the adjudicators assessing the nominations, AVBOB and Oxford University Press employees and their spouses/partners and/or family members are eligible to participate in the Campaign by submitting nominations.
  7. AVBOB and Oxford University Press Southern Africa do not accept any responsibility for late, lost, incomplete, incorrectly submitted, delayed, illegible, corrupted or misdirected nominations, claims or correspondence, whether due to error, omission, alteration, tampering, deletion, theft, destruction, transmission interruption, communications failure or otherwise. Entrants acknowledge that the Internet is not a secure medium and that the judging panel is not responsible for the security of online nominations.
  8. AVBOB reserves the right, at any time, in its sole discretion to cancel, vary, suspend or modify the Campaign, including, without limitation, circumstances where AVBOB in its own opinion considers for any reason that this Campaign is not capable of running as planned because of infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorised intervention, pandemic, technical failures or any other causes beyond the control of AVBOB, which may corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this Campaign or otherwise, subject to any written directions under applicable legislation.
  9. AVBOB and Oxford University Press Southern Africa  and its employees will not be liable for any claim, loss or liability (monetary or otherwise) sustained or incurred, direct or indirectly, as a result of, arising out of, or in any way connected with the Campaign, excluding a liability which cannot be excluded by law (in which case that liability is limited to the maximum allowable by law). Each entrant indemnifies, holds harmless and releases AVBOB and Oxford University Press Southern Africa  and its employees from all such claims made or sustained as a result of entering this Campaign, or for any loss suffered as a result of any breach of these terms and conditions by an entrant, including breach of any third-party intellectual property rights or any warranty or representation being false or incorrect. This clause survives the conclusion of the Campaign.
  10. The laws of South Africa shall apply to these Campaign rules. If any part of these Campaign rules is void or unenforceable, then that part will be severed from and the remainder construed as if the severed part had never existed.
  11. This Campaign is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Google, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn orTwitter.
Disqualification of entries
  1. The panel judging the Campaign (the “judging panel”) reserves the right to refuse any entries at its sole discretion. The judging panel also reserves the right to disqualify any entrant or entry at its absolute discretion. For example, the judging panel may disqualify:
    1. any surplus or additional entries;
    2. incomplete, indecipherable or illegal entries, or entries containing incorrect contact details;
    3. any entries that AVBOB consider contains material that is objectionable, defamatory, profane or potentially insulting, inflammatory or defamatory, or contravenes an applicable law or infringes any third party's rights;
    4. entrants who AVBOB considers have tampered with the entry process or engaged in unlawful or improper conduct that is designed to jeopardise the fair and proper conduct of the Campaign, or is generally damaging to the goodwill or reputation of AVBOB and Oxford University Press Southern Africa; or
    5. entries that AVBOB consider inappropriate for any reason.
    6. previous beneficiaries of the Road to Literacy Campaign will not be considered as part of the 2026 Campaign.
  2. AVBOB reserve the right, at any time, to verify the validity of entries and the mandatory details provided by entrants, and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these terms and conditions. The identification necessary for verification is at the sole discretion of AVBOB and Oxford University Press Southern Africa . Failure by AVBOB and Oxford University Press Southern Africa to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.
General
  1. Neither AVBOB nor OUP can accept any responsibility for any damage, loss, injury or disappointment suffered by any entrant entering the Campaign.
  2. AVBOB reserves the right both to cancel the Campaign and to amend these rules where it is deemed necessary or to account for circumstances beyond AVBOB’s control. Any notice of cancellation or changes to the rules will be posted on the AVBOB website.
  3. In the event of any dispute regarding these rules or any other matter relating to the Campaign, the decision of AVBOB shall be final and no correspondence or discussion shall be entered into.
  4. Entries not complying with the Campaign rules will be disqualified, as will entrants in breach of the rules.
  5. Entrants must not approach or attempt to influence any judge or member of AVBOB or OUP staff over Campaign matters.
  6. The Campaign rules will be governed by South African law, and any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of South Africa.
Prizes
  1. Each winning institution will receive a maximum of one trolley library stocked with 500 books, either in English or in a combination of English and one other official South African written language.
  2. AVBOB reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to allocate a trolley library to any beneficiary previously nominated under the Road To Literacy campaign. Such allocation shall be subject to AVBOB’s internal criteria and availability, and no entitlement or guarantee is conferred upon any nominated beneficiary.
  3. Notwithstanding the foregoing, AVBOB reserves the right, at its sole discretion and subject to variables such as trolley library usage, number of learners, and other relevant considerations, to allocate an additional trolley library to any beneficiary that may have previously received one.
  4. Winning institutions will be asked to provide a letter which acknowledges receipt of the prize.
  5. AVBOB reserves the right, in conjunction with the Campaign panel of judges, to withhold the prizes, if, in their opinion, such action is justified for any reason.
  6. Prizes are not transferable and cannot be deferred or exchanged.
  7. If a winning school cannot accept the prize for any reason whatsoever, the prize will be awarded to the next selected qualifying entrant, at AVBOB’s discretion.
Notification of beneficiaries
  1. Winning institutions will be announced by no later than 30 June 2026.
  2. Details of the beneficiaries will be announced on avbob.zero-data.co.za, the press and relevant social media channels.
  3. Due to the logistical requirements required to deliver the trolley libraries, it should be noted that the delivery can take between 6 – 9 months.
  4. Winning institutions will be notified directly via the contact details provided during nomination. The judges’ decision regarding the winners is final and binding, and no correspondence will be entered into.
Use of personal information
  1. An entrant’s personal information as defined by the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act 4 of 2013, may be collected, received, recorded, organised, collated, stored, updated, processed, analysed and used and disclosed by AVBOB for Campaign purposes and other functions incidental hereto, including disclosure of the beneficiaries’ personal information in publications made available to the public throughout the world, by use of online, print and other media services and communication tools. By entering the Campaign, the entrant consents to the lawful collection, processing, storing and transferring of his or her personal information. The entrant also acknowledges and accepts that it is his or her responsibility to provide AVBOB with his or her correct personal information and should these details change, inform AVBOB of the changes immediately. A request to access, update or correct any personal information held by AVBOB should be directed to roadtoliteracy@avbob.co.za.
  2. By entering the Campaign, an entrant (and if an entrant is under 18 years of age, an entrant’s parent or legal guardian) consents to AVBOB and Oxford University Press Southern Africa using and disclosing any part of the entrant’s personal information provided as set out above, including, without limitation, the following:
    1. Use in any communications, publications, marketing or promotional activities associated with the Campaign.
    2. Personal data will only be used for purposes related to the Campaign and will not be sold or shared with third parties (unless legally required).
  3. In the event of winning, use and disclosure of an entrant’s name and photograph(s) for publicity, marketing, promotional and publication purposes, including throughout the world, whether by online, print or other media services and communication tools.
  4. An entrant may withdraw his or her consent to future use and disclosure of personal information in promotional and marketing activities and publications at any time by written notice to roadtoliteracy@avbob.co.za and, upon receipt of such notice, AVBOB will take reasonable steps to cease using and disclosing that personal information as soon as is reasonably possible. In some instances, AVBOB and Oxford University Press Southern Africa  will not be able to cease the use or disclosure, for example, where information has been cached by others.
  5. For further details pertaining to the use of your personal information, please refer to our Privacy Policy which is available on our website for your convenience.
  6. By entering this Campaign, you hereby grant AVBOB and Oxford University Press Southern Africa  permission to utilise information submitted during the nomination process.
